Meet the Rising Stars semi-finalists: the South West’s top three early-stage companies

Last year saw Metasonics (from Bristol) succeed in being crowd a winner of our Rising Stars 2019 competition. Early-stage companies from across the UK are once again set to pitch at this year’s Rising Stars 2.0 semi-final on 15-16 January in Manchester – and we’ve had a chat with founders of the three competitors who are set to represent the South West. Read on for their thoughts on reaching the semi-final, and what it’s like to be a digital tech company based in the region.

Codices

Based in Truro, Codices Interactive (@quizkit) provides viewers with a live interactive video platform, enabling any broadcaster to create interactive shows. Its first product is now the most used gameshow creation tool on the Twitch platform, with 1,000+ monthly active broadcasters and 300,000 unique monthly viewers. Tim Edwards, cofounder at Codices, tells us more.

It’s a great validation of all the hard work we’ve done to grow our userbase and build our tools to bring about the next generation of live interactive shows. We don’t often get to see how we compare to other business and there are a lot of amazing startups in the South West, so we are delighted to be singled out as one of the top ones.

As the furthest South-Western semi-finalist in Cornwall, we have the benefit of having beaches, countryside and endless outdoor activities to balance out the fast and demanding work required to start a business. At the same time, we have regular flights and trains to easily get to the UK’s biggest cities.

Value Xd

Value Xd (@ValueXd), from Exeter, has built a cloud-based analytics platform that reinvents the analytical value chain. Its platform provides a variety of tools through which businesses and investors can align their decisions with environmental responsibility and sustainable development goals, all while covering conventional analytical techniques. Armen Papazian, cofounder at Value Xd, tells us more.

Thrilled, excited, restored, and rejuvenated! Being shortlisted as a Rising Stars semi-finalist has wiped clean the pain and exhaustion of the last four-plus years of relentless hard work. When the call from Tech Nation came, we were finalising our patent submissions in the UK and the US. It was a vindication of sorts, as the creation and delivery of a revolutionary cloud-based analytics platform has demanded that we continuously renew our faith and efforts against all odds, doubts and fears.

Value Xd has had Exeter as its registered address since inception. Most of the design and structural work was done in Copplestone, a unique village at the heart of Devon, which has made it possible for us to develop our software in the quiet and beauty that is so particular to the region. Without noise, interference or unnecessary commotion, Devon has given us the time and space to develop our product, and for that we are grateful. Our next phase of growth may require us to expand and grow beyond our initial birthplace, but we will always remain a company born in the majestic landscapes of the South West.

Filmily

Fans at large scale events record every moment and share it on social media and currently rights owners get little or no value from it. Filmily’s (@filmilyapp) patented algorithms collect content from thousands of phones, automatically learn about it through AI and edit the clips together to create branded films. Andy Doyle, cofounder at Filmily, tell us more.

It was amazing to be selected. As a startup it can be a lonely experience when you’re trying to push forward and get known. When a PR machine and respected competition such as Rising Stars recognised us as one of the top three in the South West, it was a shock to say the least. We believe passionately in what we are doing, and to be able to tell a wider audience about it is scary but really exciting.

Living in Totnes and the South West is lovely. It’s full of people who do interesting things, has lots of entrepreneurs and many caring between people in the area. We are also privileged to be near the sea and Dartmoor, as it really freshens the mind and body while helping motivation. The South West is certainly a special place, which is why we have lived here longer than anywhere else.
