Meet the Rising Stars semi-finalists: the North West’s top three early-stage companies

Last year saw North West-based companies Tickr (from Liverpool) and PPC Protect (Horwich) succeed in being crowned winners of our Rising Stars 2019 competition. Early-stage companies from across the UK are once again set to pitch at this year’s Rising Stars 2.0 semi-final on 15-16 January in Manchester – and we’ve had a chat with founders of the three competitors who are set to represent the North West. Read on for their thoughts on reaching the semi-final, and what it’s like to be a digital tech company based in the region.

tootoot

Tootoot (@tootootofficial) is award-winning software that supports the psychological safety and wellbeing of individuals within education, sport and the workplace. Tootoot provides a way for individuals to raise a concern to their organisation with complete confidentiality. Cofounder Michael Brennan tells us more.

How does it feel to be a Rising Stars semi-finalist?

We’re absolutely delighted to be chosen as a Rising Star semi-finalist and recognised as one of the top companies in the North West. I have developed a wonderful team who are dedicated to the growth and development of tootoot, and I dedicate this to them as they are the ones who deserve to be recognised. Having been awarded Forbes 30 Under 30 status in 2018 I didn’t know if I would be able to top this achievement, but I certainly have with this recognition.

Superb. We moved into the Manchester Technology Centre last year to ensure that we could stretch our investment to attract the North West’s leading developers, marketers and sales professionals to ensure we can continue to scale quickly. Our people drive our purpose and develop our product through passion and hard work. Working in the region has allowed us to develop and shape our future.

UrbanChain

They aim to transform these markets, democratise their structure, and optimise and integrate processes to reduce the costs for end-users. about  Somayeh Taheri, cofounder at UrbanChain, tells us more.

How does it feel to be a Rising Stars semi-finalist?

Being recognised is very important because when that happens, it gives you hope and makes you proud of what you’re doing. These awards have been very useful for us – Rising Stars has helped us get on the front page of Google without spending any money on marketing. Tech Nation is international, so it gives us a chance to be seen globally.

What’s it like being a digital tech company in the North West?

The North of England doesn’t offer digital companies the same level of support that is available for companies in the south, but we’re very committed to where we’re based. We have a plan to crack this region and, as we grow and scale, open the doors for other digital companies to scale in the north. It’s hard for us now, but we are committed to making it easier for the next generation of people who want to make real change in this region.

Culture Shift

Culture Shift (@reportsupport_)’s tech for good product, called Report + Support, is a revolutionary online platform that allows victims and witnesses of any kind of bullying, abuse or harassment to report it, either anonymously or with details. The system also signposts those in need of support and provides organisations with vital information to help them tackle toxic behaviour and cultures. Culture Shift’s cofounder Gemma McCall tells us more.

How does it feel to be a Rising Stars semi-finalist?

Being recognised as one of the Rising Stars of UK tech is pretty awesome! I’m hugely proud of what we’ve achieved so far, but there is so much more to do. Our mission is to use technology to positively change workplace cultures all over the world, and I hope this accolade can help us achieve that mission sooner.

What’s it like being a digital tech company in the North West?

Manchester has always been a city at the forefront of innovation. There, stories of innovators like Turing sit alongside those of campaigners such as Pankhurst and forward-thinking businesses like the Co-operative movement. Launching a tech startup here means we’re not short of stories of inspiring businesses right on our doorstep. The fact that Manchester is a formidable tech hub means we’ve got a lot of talent in the region, something that’s important for us as we look to grow and expand our team.
