Meet the Rising Stars semi-finalists: the East of England’s top three early-stage companies

Last year saw East of England-based company Developing Experts (from Norwich) succeed in being a crowned winner of our Rising Stars 2019 competition. Early-stage companies from across the UK are once again set to pitch at this year’s Rising Stars 2.0 semi-final on 15-16 January in Manchester – and we’ve had a chat with founders of the three competitors who are set to represent the East of England. Read on for their thoughts on reaching the semi-final, and what it’s like to be a digital tech company based in the region.

Conundrum

Conundrum (@conundrumai) is an AI-powered software for industrial companies. It oversees a whole production process and assists factory engineers in decision making, helping to reduce waste and downtime. Konstantin Kiselev, cofounder at Conundrum, tells us more.

How does it feel to be a Rising Stars semi-finalist?

Being chosen as a Rising Stars semi-finalist is a great boost to Conundrum and we will continue to work hard to capitalise on this milestone to further advance our business. The competition was very strong and we are honoured and proud to be chosen as a semi-finalist among so many outstanding top-notch companies. It is a rewarding feeling when the hard work pays off, but at the same time it is just the beginning for us and we feel very motivated to work even harder this year to make to the finals.

What’s it like being a digital tech company in the East of England?

The East of England is a great place to be based in terms of business infrastructure, environment and the network it offers. The environment is very business-friendly; bureaucracy is reduced to a minimum to make founders focus on business, not paperwork. Starting our business and registering it was fast and simple. The region also offers great opportunities for business networking both in terms of finding new clients and potential investors.

Foundries.io

Foundries.io (@foundriesio) is addressing security and device management for IoT and Edge devices. FoundriesFactory is a self-service cloud solution that provides turnkey services to develop, secure, deploy and maintain embedded IoT and Edge compute products. They enable secure IoT devices and provide lifetime software maintenance at a fraction of current costs. George Grey, cofounder at Foundries.io, tells us more.

How does it feel to be a Rising Stars semi-finalist?

We’re looking forward to it – I personally hope that it will provide us with increased visibility – and I’m sure it will. That would enable our product to help not only established IoT companies, but also our fellow startups across the world and of course the UK.

What’s it like being a digital tech company in the East of England?

I think the UK is a very good place to start up a company that needs to be globally operating because of challenges between particularly the China and US regions. But we also have the benefit of the Cambridge and London high-tech community and contacts, some of which have been in place for many years. So, I think this is a good place to be.

Pickr

Pickr (@pickrworks) is a digital staffing platform that uses technology to help businesses reduce the costs of building and managing a flexible workforce. Businesses can augment their workforce in an instant, connecting with the UK’s largest community of skilled industrial workers. We spoke to founder Kane Halsey to find out more.

How does it feel to be a Rising Stars semi-finalist?

It’s fantastic recognition of everything the team have achieved so far and a cause for celebration. In terms of executing our vision of revolutionising the world of work, we have a long way to go. The Rising Stars programme will give us a great platform for promoting what we do, helping businesses deliver major infrastructure projects by changing the way they build and empower their delivery teams.

What’s it like being a digital tech company in the East of England?

We’re very proud to be a Norwich-based tech startup. We have some fantastic universities churning out the next generation of tech talent and a strong local community which supports professional best practice of our developers. The Norwich-Cambridge tech corridor showcases just how much is going on in the region and that can only carry on improving with better infrastructure and transport links to London.
